Wild Creatures of Hong Kong

Learn, be surprised and entertained with facts & features about your favourite animals(or discover a new one!)

When trying to identity animals remember a few things that can change:

  • Males and Females can be completely different. This is called sexual dimorphism, and they can be vastly different colours or sizes. Look at Crimson dropwing dragonflies, or the Golden Orb Web spiders.

  • Young and mature animals can be radically different. Think butterflies.

  • Some species change colour when it is their breeding season; some birds even change the colour of their beaks, and plumage, and feet.

  • Common names can vary. Even the latin names can change with updates in taxonomy, and are you really going to remember the latin?

  • Some animals have different "morphs", or colour changes that are not common, such as albinos or melanistic (like a completely black red-neck snake).

  • If in doubt, run away...er, I mean ask an expert. (Not me, i'm a photographer, not a naturalist).

Birds, also known as avian dinosaurs, are a group of endothermic vertebrates, characterised by feathers, toothless beaked jaws, the laying of hard-shelled eggs, a high metabolic rate, a four-chambered heart, and a strong yet lightweight skeleton.

Reptiles are tetrapod animals in the class Reptilia, comprising today's turtles, crocodilians, snakes, amphisbaenians, lizards, tuatara, and their extinct relatives.

An arthropod is an invertebrate animal having an exoskeleton, a segmented body, and jointed appendages. Arthropods form the phylum Arthropoda, which includes the insects, arachnids, myriapods, and crustaceans.

Mammals are any vertebrates within the class Mammalia, a clade of endothermic amniotes distinguished from reptiles by the possession of a neocortex, hair, three middle ear bones and mammary glands.
